Long ago and far away (1983 to be precise) a good thing happened: Paul Kantner released his second 'solo' album, Planet Earth Rock And Roll Orchestra. Then a bad thing happened: it was totally ignored by the mainstream music press! Then another good thing happened...

Thinking that it was a crying shame that such a wonderful record should go unreviewed, unremarked and unknown (just because the mainstream music press didn't think it was what people wanted to read about when Haircut 100 and The Human League were all the rage!!!), Steve Rowland opted for direct action and started a Jefferson family fanzine (which he initially called the Transcaucasian Airmachine Review) to fill the mighty void. It was available on subscription (50p a shot in those days) and ran very succesfully for four issues before morphing into Holding Together magazine....see below... |

Recommencing with Issue #1 (opposite) in 1986 under the aegis of Bill Parry (while Steve was off having babies), Holding Together magazine has carried on, man and dog, for over 20 years acting as an outlet for information about the doings of Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship, Hot Tuna, SVT, KBC Band, Marty Balin Band (Wolfpack) and all the off-shoots, solo recordings and permutations of things Jefferson down the decades. But it didn't stop there. We took it on ourselves (Bill and Steve) to cover everything musical that we thought was hip and that our loyal readership would like to hear about - that included most West Coast music and psychedelia but also paisley underground, a lot of new wave, country and incipient Americana. |
