From July 2009, with Paul Kantner/Cathy Richardson on the cover (see above), this issue commenced our interview with Cathy Richardson, latest female lead singer with Jefferson Starship and concluded the David Freiberg interview. It also carried a feature on Dead Poppies (Papaverite), revisited reviews of Jefferson Starship's Red Octopus album from 1975, assessed new albums from Jerry Garcia & John Kahn, Green Ray, Jorma Kaukonen, Moonalice, Spaceseed and Wendy & Lisa, checked out re-releases from The Pretty Things and Peppermint Trolley Company and presented live reviews Bevis Frond, Jackson Browne and The Pretty Things.
HT#44: David Freiberg interview (i); Gary Duncan interview; Dragon Fly reprised; Strawbs; Superczar; Quicksilver. Jefferson Starship and Cathy Richardson Band live. From January 2009, with Dragon Fly on the cover (see above), this issue carried part one of our long-overdue interview with David Freiberg and also an interview with Gary Duncan of QMS. It revisited reviews of Jefferson Starship's Dragon Fly album from 1974, re-evaluated a lost classic from Superczar (The Misadventures of Stanley Howard), re-appraised the box set A Taste Of Strawbs, reviewed excellent new books about Immediate Records and The Byrds, assessed new albums from Ryan Adams, The Aliens, Jim Boggia, Jackson Browne, Chris Conway, Future Clouds & Radar, Eliza Gilkyson, Mercury Rev, Eve Selis and The Stills, fitted in live reviews of Jefferson Starship, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Quecia, Cathy Richardson Band, Beth Hart and Mercury Rev and still found room to pontificate on the editors' critical faves of 2008 in our round up of the departed year...very low stocks on this one, just a handful left.
HT#43: Signe Anderson interview; 1968 - Beyond the Revolution; Jefferson Starship Live in the UK; Early Flight reprised; Quicksilver Then & Now; Have You Seen The Stars Tonite. From October 2008, with Signe Anderson and Paul Kantner on the cover (see above), this issue carried our new interview with the lovely Signe (Anderson) Ettlin, the original high-flyin' female lead singer with Jefferson Airplane.It also presented Bill Parry's essay on the music that provided the soundtrack to that most momentious year, 1968. There were in-depth reports from the Jefferson Starship and Quicksilver shows played in the UK in the summer, live reviews of gigs by Barry Melton, the Bangles, Little Feat, The Coral and Stephen Stills, reviews of the archive Quicksilver Messenger Service live albums, reviews of new releases from Walter Becker, Fleet Foxes, Clive James & Pete Atkin, Little Feat, Stereolab and The Submarines and an appreciation of Craig Fenton's new book about Jefferson Starship.
HT#42: Jefferson Starship's 'Tree Of Liberty' album track-by-track preview; Peter Kaukonen interview; Meet Cathy Richardson; The Bevis Frond interview (ii); Mick's Picks; Jefferson Starship Live @ The Ledson; Black Kangaroo; Armed Madhouse. From July 2008, with Cathy Richardson on the cover (see above), this issue presented a track-by-track preview of the new Jefferson Starship album 'Jefferson's Tree Of Liberty' plus some studio photographs from the sessions. It also carried a great interview with Peter Kaukonen, concluded the interview with Nick Saloman of The Bevis Frond, gave an introduction to the new Jefferson Starship female lead singer Cathy Richardson and introduced the first three live recordings in the Mick's Picks series of Jefferson Starship archives.There were live reviews of all three nights Jefferson Starship unplugged played at The Ledson, plus contemporary appreciations of Black Kangaroo, Fat Fandango, Playing My Fiddle For You and Quah, reviews of new albums by Ed Ryan, Sloan, Aimee Mann, Vampire Weekend and Sam Phillips and a review of Greg Palast's take on 21st Century America, Armed Madhouse.
HT#41: Jefferson Starship Live @ BB King's; The Bevis Frond interview (i); The Group Image; Thirty Seconds Over Winterland reprised; Randy California; Love; Green On Red; Betty Davis; Holding Together's records of 2007. From April 2008, with David Freiberg on the cover, this issue reported on the live JS 2007 BB King's gig that has just been released in the Mick's Picks series. It also carried part one of our interview with Nick Saloman of legendary psych band The Bevis Frond, a re-assessment of obscure '60s psych band The Group Image and archive and contemporary appreciations of the live Jefferson Airplane album Thirty Seconds Over Winterland. It reviewed box sets from Randy California and Love, re-issues from Green On Red and Betty Davis, an archive release from Jefferson Airplane and new albums by John Sebastian and David Grisman, Raspberries, Ash, Little Big Town, Miles From Nowhere and Kendel Carson.
HT#40: 40th Anniversary Summer Of Love; The Coral interview; Diana Mangano interview (ii); Mohair interview; Manhole reprised. From October 2007, with Marty, Grace and Jorma on the cover from the Airplane's psychedelic daze of yore, this issue reviewed all three significant 40th Anniversary Summer Of Love gatherings at Monterey, Sausalito and San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. It carried an in-depth interview with James Skelly of top UK psych-rock band The Coral, an interview with Tom Billington of Mohair and the concluding part of the Diana Mangano interview. It also carried reprints from the archives from the release of Grace Slick's 'Manhole' album in 1974 and detailed reviews of new releases by Kevin Ayers, The Coral, Graham Parker, Grace Potter & the Nocturnals, Quicksilver and many more.
HT#39: Paul Kantner interview (iii); Diana Mangano interview (i); Baron von Tollbooth reprised; Space Opera; High Tide; Miles Davis in Europe. From August 2007, this sported a great image of Diana Mangano on the cover and commenced our new interview with Jefferson Starship's female lead vocalist. It also concluded our long interview with Paul Kantner - on playing live versus in the studio, the importance of science-fiction and what the future holds for JS. Plus a feature on Space Opera, reprints from the archives from the release of 'Baron Von Tollbooth' and detailed reviews of recently released live albums by Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna and Quicksilver.
HT#38: Paul Kantner interview (ii); LAuren Taines interview; Roger Chapman interview; Long John Silver reprised; Monterey Pop revisited; Translator; Fat Fandango; Dion. From May 2007, with Kantner, Slick and Kaukonen on the cover, this continued our long interview with PK - concentrating on his songs and the song-writing process. It also carried a great interview with LAuren Taines, whose album 'Hideout Is A Crook's Best Friend' gave the world new takes on some old Airplane numbers like "Pretty As You Feel", "Emergency", "You Wear Your Dresses Too Short" and "The Bludgeon Of A Bluecoat". It also had our interview with Roger Chapman, reprints from the archives from the release of 'Long John Silver' and reviews of new albums from Jorma Kaukonen, The Shins, Sloan, Spaceseed and more.
HT#37: Paul Kantner interview; Jefferson Starship's 2006 European Tour; The Byrds; David Crosby; Roger McGuinn; Hillbilly Redux; Holding Together's records of 2006. From March 2007, with Paul Kantner toting Rickenbacker on the cover, this kicked off our new in-depth interview with the main man. It's very possibly the best intervew we've ever carried - and part one explored Paul's roots and the early days of Jefferson Airplane. It also had a long feature on JS's 2006 European tour, reviewed box-sets from The Byrds, David Crosby and Roger McGuinn, provided a follow-up to the articles on the History of Country Rock and found room for reviews of new releases from Georgia Blue, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Town Criers, Pure Prairie League, Gary Duncan, Nina Gordon and more...very low stocks on this one, just a handful left

HT#35: Eve Selis interview; Chris Smith (JS keyboard player) interview; Grace Slick interview; History of Country Rock (ii); Darby Gould's desert island picks; Bark reprised; The Zen Minks. From July 2006, with a great pic of Jorma Kaukonen on the cover, this issue carried exclusive interviews with Eve Selis (a country-rock superstar in the making) andJefferson Starship's keyboard-player extraordinare Mr Chris Smith. It also syndicated a recent interview with Grace Slick. It also offered the concluding part of Bill Parry's Hillbilly Deluxe article, Darby Gould's Desert Island Discs, reprints from the archives from the release of 'Bark', an article on The Zen Minks, a review of CliveJones' excellent book about the Paisley Underground and reviews of albums by Mohair, Shack, The Loud Family, Calexico, Eric Burdon and more.
HT#34: Bob Harvey interview (ii); Jefferson Starship live; History of Country Rock; The Bevis Frond; Holding Together's records of 2005. From May 2006, this carried the second instalment of the Bob Harvey interview, part one of Bill Parry's Hillbilly Deluxe (a history of country-rock), several long reviews of Jefferson Starship's Fall 2005 tour and an assessment of The Bevis Frond's 'Inner Marshland' masterpiece. It also carried our plaudits for rock'n'roll endeavour in 2005 and reviewed new releases from acts as diverse as Jo Jo Gunne, Marty Balin, SHeDAISY, Julian Cope, Ryan Adams and more.
HT#33: Bob Harvey (original JA bass player) interview; David Cohen (CJ&F) interview; Blows Against The Empire reprised; Shanti; Touchstone. From October 2005, this sported our all-time-favourite cover (of Paul Kantner courtesy of Grace Slick). Inside was part one of a truly fascinating interview with Bob Harvey (the original bass player in Jefferson Airplane). There was also an interview with David Bennett Cohen (ex-CJ&F), reprints from the archives from the release of 'Blows Against The Empire' and Phill Sawyer's personal account of the mixing of side two of that album. Albums by Shanti and Touchstone were re-evaluated and there were reviews of new albums by Big Star, San Francisco Blue, Amy Rigby, James McMurty, Jim Boggia, Sheryl Crow and more...very low stocks on this one, just a handful left.
HT#32: Slick Aguilar interview (ii); a tribute to Spencer Dryden; Volunteers reprised; The Small Faces; Jerry Garcia; Yankee Dollar; Jo Jo Gunne. From July 2005, this edition carried a new interview with Jefferson Starship lead guitarist Mark "Slick" Aguilar, tributes to Spencer Dryden and Elvin Jones, a re-assessment of The Yankee Dollar and reprints from the archives from the release of 'Volunteers'. It also reviewed box-sets from The Small Faces and Jerry Garcia and new releases by The Coral, Chris Hillman, Dead Poppies, Miranda Lambert, Julian Cope, The Sights and Steven Stills among others.
HT#31: Plummet Airlines interview; Jefferson Starship 2004 UK Tour; Crown Of Creation reprised; a tribute to Jeff Wells; Holding Together's records of 2004. From February 2005, with Grace Slick on the cover, this issue carried an in-depth interview with all five members of one of Britain's most under-rated 'West Coast' bands, the fabulous Plummet Airlines. They got back together especially for the interview and re-formed the band as a result! There was also a tribute to Jeff Wells, a detailed review of Jefferson Starship's 2004 UK tour, the story of how the artwork for 'Crown Of Creation' came together, reviews of new albums by Peter Kaukonen,Tim Gorman, Eve Selis, Patti Smith, The Shins, Hoodoo Gurus and more.
HT#30: Slick Aguilar (JS lead guitar) interview; Amy Rigby interview; After Bathing At Baxter's reprised; Sapphire Thinkers; Holding Together's records of 2003. From February 2004, with my favourite Mark 'Sick' Aguilar photograph on the cover, this issue featured Dave Schelly's interview with Jefferson Starship's lead guitarist. It also carried my interview with the mod housewife, Ms Amy Rigby, Frank Kofsky's detailed appreciation of the Airplane's 'After Bathing At Baxter's', a retrospective on Sapphire Thinkers, reviews of new albums by Little Feat, The Waifs, Jack Johnson and Absolute Grey among others, plus Holding Together's critical list of albums and singles from 2003.
HT#29: Prairie Prince interview; Kevin Ayers interview; Fountains of Wayne interview; Surrealistic Pillow reprised; Jefferson Airplane @ The Roundhouse, London in 1968. From October 2003, with Jack Casady gracing the front page (in honour of his first solo album), this issue carried our interview with Prairie Prince, long-time drummer for Jefferson Starship (and of course The Tubes before that). We also ran interviews with Kevin Ayers and with Adam Schlesinger of Fountains Of Wayne. We reproduced Sandy Pearlman's idiosyncratic essay on the Airplane's 'Surrealistic Pillow' and Peter Drake remembered the Airplane's gig at London's Roundhouse from September 1968. There were reviews of new releases by Jack Casady, The Coral, Pete Sears, Fountains Of Wayne, Jack Bruce, The Magic Band and more.
HT#28: Jefferson Starship Live on the West Coast (Galactic Reunion 2003); Tom Lilly (JS bass player) interview; Jefferson Airplane Takes Off reprised; Cockeyed Ghost interview; Jeff Tamarkin's Airplane boom reviewed; JS live in Italy; Holding Together's records of 2002. From May 2003, the centrepiece of this issue was a long review of the Jefferson Family Galactic Reunion gig which took place in San Rafael in April 2003, bringing together not only Jefferson Starship but also Signe Anderson, Spencer Dryden, David Freiberg, Jack Traylor, Tim Gorman and Darby Gould. It was a phenomenal evening. There are also interviews with Tom Lilly (playing bass with JS at the time) and Adam Marsland (of the wonderful Cockeyed Ghost), plus a review of JS live in Italy. This issue also kicked off our Come Up The Years archive feature with reprints of articles and reviews from the original release of 'Jefferson Airplane Takes Off' There was also room for a detailed appreciation of Jeff Tamarkin's book 'Got A Revolution! - The Turbulent Flight Of Jefferson Airplane' and reviews of new albums by Marty Balin, Robyn Hitchcock, Venus Ray, The Bangles, Amy Rigby and Drive By Truckers among others.
HT#27: Jefferson Starship Euro 2002 Tour Special - extensive reviews and pictures from all nine shows. From February 2003, this special issue featured reviews (and lots of pictures) of each of the nine shows in the previous autumn's 2002 European tour, each one by a different author. Marty Balin graced the cover in his x-ray spex and we rounded it out with Holding Together's critical list of 2002's best new albums, singles and re-releases.
HT#26: Jack Casady & Jorma Kaukonen interview; John Cipollina; JA/JS Bootleg CD discography; Holding Together's records of 2001. From October 2002, and with the lovely Diana Mangano on the cover, this issue carried our fascinating interview with the tuna twins, Jack Casady and Jorma Kaukonen. It also critiqued Grace Slick's rock and roll memoirs, paid tribute to the world's most benign carnivore, John Cipollina, provided an update on quasi-legal and bootleg CDs featuring JA/JS and carried Holding Together's plaudits for rock and roll artistry in 2001 as well as reviewing new albums by CPR, Brooks & Dunn, The String Cheese Incident and The Firing Squad among others.
